Albertanus of Brescia is considered one of the greatest Italian intellectuals of the first half of the 13th century. Judge, politician, rhetorician, he was the author of three treatises and of five sermons. His works were real ‘best sellers’, both in their original compilation in Latin, and in numerous vernacular versions spread all across Europe. This paper will focus on the minor works of Albertanus, the five sermons that he wrote within a confraternal context. Albertanus’ sermons contain insights of remarkable interest, both for the anticipation or perfecting of topics that we find in the treatises, and for themes that seem to find privileged place in the homiletic support, as the issue of poverty.

Fabrizio Pagnoni, La difficile eredità ducale. Popolo e fazioni in Lombardia e nella Brescia malatestiana (1404-1421)

This essay provides an analysis of the troubled period that followed the death of Gian Galeazzo Visconti, by particularly focusing on the dominion of Pandolfo Malatesta in Eastern Lombardy, one of the condottieri that had served the duchy in the previous decades. Special attention has been paid to the relationship between the new government and local factions, on order to verity to what extent Pandolfo was able to maintain the super partes role towards the factions that Gian Galeazzo had already promoted in the duchy. Another topic concerns the re-emergence of the Popolo within the local political society at that time, and particularly the weakness of this phenomenon in Brescia, at least until the first decade of the 15th century.

The essay introduces and comments on a very special document. It is a report of the Sienese mercantile court (a unicum of its kind for the XIV century), recopied in the register of a Florentine notary: ser Lando di Fortino dalla Cicogna. In a couple of folios appear Mediterranean routes that connect Naples with Barcelona, merchants and ship-owners of various Italian cities, the officials of the port of Talamone, the judges of Mercanzia di Siena, the vicar of the bishop of Florence and his closest collaborators.

If periodization ranks among the more elusive tasks of historical scholarship, that is particularly true when it becomes a battlefield between different historiographical traditions and ideological grand narratives. ‘Late middle ages’ and ‘Renaissance’ are crucial concepts both in Italian history and Western ideology. Their origins are different, but their use is frequently connected, and their conceptual story sometimes antagonistic. The present essay aims at looking at research on the medieval and early modern Italian peninsula from the 1950s to present days in order to investigate some aspects and facets of the historiographical debate that surrounded – both in Italy and in the Anglo-American world – the increasing use of ‘late middle ages’ and the recent ‘rediscovery’ of a political Renaissance.

William R. Day, Jr, Before the Libro della Zecca. Money and coinage in Florenze in the 12th and 13th centuries. Part II (Silver and gold trade coinages)

This article focuses on the fine silver and gold trade coinages of the mint of Florence in the thirteenth century. It summarises the early silver grossi from the 1230s and raises questions about the existing classification while drawing attention to aspects that require further study. It also traces the spread of the city’s gold florin, introduced in 1252, as an actual coin, the benchmark for other gold coins, the basis for an ‘international’ money of account and the model for many imitation florins. It stresses the importance of the florin in the economic development of Florence and in the so-called commercial revolution of the Middle Ages.

The article addresses the historical foundation of rumours about the illegitimate birth of messer Bernardo Machiavelli, Niccolò’s father. Although these rumours begun spreading during the writer’s life, they have been in fact largely neglected by Machiavelli biographers. In the first part of the paper a new survey of the records pertaining to both Bernardo and his ancestors offers fresh evidence to support his illegitimate status. The second part of the paper shows to what extent, in the political turmoil following the introduction of the Consiglio Maggiore in late 1494, Bernardo’s illegitimacy prevented Niccolò from actively participating in the Florentine political life of his time, allowing him to pursue only a career of a strictly executive nature in the city’s administration.

Discussioni

The article analyses the book of Serban Marin, underlining the positive and negative aspects of this reflection about the Venetian foundation myths. From a careful analysis of Venetian chronicles some key elements, not mentioned in the aforesaid book, may be inferred: the absence of the description of the mythological origins of the city of St. Mark in many medieval Venetian chronicles, the paucity of iconographic sources or the framing of the Venetian myth within the contemporary European mythopoesis.

Michele Simonetto, Tardo illuminismo e diritti dell’uomo

The essay, inspired by Ferrone’s book Storia dei diritti dell’uomo, intends to analyze the developments of the debate on human rights in the history of Western thought, especially in relation to the ideas of late Enlightenment. The attention is focused on thinkers such as Rousseau, Genovesi, and the exponents of the early German romanticism to conclude, following the original Ferrone’s itineraries, with a personality that seems detached from the Enlightenment as Giambattista Vico, properly portrayed as a man of that age.

Analyzing both placita and private charters preserved in ecclesiastical archives the aim of this paper is to study the role played by local officials in the construction of political consensus within rural societies in Emilia between the reigns of Louis the Pious and Berengar.

Richard A. Goldthwaite, Performance of the Florentine economy, 1494-1512: moneys and accountancy

This is the first in a series of studies of the Florentine economy from 1494 to 1512, a period of considerable political instability both at home and abroad. Since the principal source is the city’s rich patrimony of accounts books, this first article concentrates on technical monetary problems, in particular the complex co-existence of several moneys-of-account and the increased circulation of the gold florin. The conclusion points to some of the economic, social and even cultural implications of the discussion.

The article is intended to retrace Florentine archivists’ concepts about education of the archives personnel in the years between the second half the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. An increased professionalization of the archivistic class was thought as a fairly significant element for the purpose of structuring the preservation system of archives in Italy. The theoretical development is analyzed by means of a survey of the archival documents from the “Soprintendenza generale agli archivi toscani” and of the personal correspondence, in order to assess the effect of speculation on legislation and on inclusion policies.

Rado Pezdir – Janez Šušteršič, Yugoslav companies in zone A of the free territory of Trieste. The formation of an institutionalized parallel economy controlled by the State Security Service

Based on the recently disclosed archive materials, the article documents the evolution of a network of Yugoslav-controlled companies in Zone A of the Free Territory of Trieste in the period from 1945 to 1951. It provides information on companies’ business performance, their ownership and governance structures, links with Yugoslav and Slovenian institutions and state-owned enterprises, and examples of illegal commercial and financial operations. The focus is on the yet unknown role of the Slovenian State Security Service (UDV) in these companies. To put it in a wider context, the article provides an account of political decisions and organisational measures taken in Slovenia and Yugoslavia during 1950 and 1951 that put companies in Zone A firmly and formally under the control of the UDV and made them a part of a larger clandestine network operating in Italy, Austria, Germany and Switzerland, connected through an off-shore financial company established by UDV in Liechtenstein in 1951. These developments concluded the process of institutionalisation of a parallel economy operated by UDV, which had started already in 1948 with the takeover of SAF.

Armando Antonelli, «Çascuno fa scriver brevi e carti».
