Memorie

Lorenzo Caravaggi, Tra dialogo e conflitto.

article explores the processes of collaboration between public authorities and elite civic families through which contemporaries could keep internecine feuds under control and secure periods of political stability, such as that experienced at Bologna between 1280 and 1296. It is here demonstrated that the most powerful households of the city actively helped civic authorities to pacify on-going feuds between third parties. The internal fragmentation which characterised late medieval cities did not always lead to volatility and political instability. Through dialogue and collaboration, contemporaries could guarantee peace, balance, and prosperity.

Jacopo Paganelli, «Comune Pisanum habere in fratrem precipuum maiorem».

The essay reconstructs the relationships that linked Volterra to the city of Pisa in the middle of the fourteenth century. Through the examination of the government action of Ottaviano Belforti and his son Filippo, who became bishop of Volterra in 1348, we can see how the Tyrrhenian city – far from being in decline – was able to build an alternative political space to that of Florence.

Simone Lombardo, Tra insicurezza e cambiamenti d’epoca.

The Genoese coral fishing in North Africa depicts the surrounding world as a mirror. This study explores the changes occurred between the crisis of the first settlement of Marsacares, founded in mid-15th Century, and the taking of Tabarca, around 1540. The differences and developments coming out from this comparison show the growing difficulties and the transformation of North African border into a violent frontier, marked by troubles in the passage from the Middle Ages to the Modern World.

This article aims to explore the wide range of errors and mistakes relating to the medical profession as reported in the ‘Summae confessorum’ and in printed manuals (handbooks) of confessional practice (late XV-late XVI centuries). Designed for practical use, this kind of literature provided priests with easily accessible lists of sins committed by physicians, surgeons, apothecaries. By focusing on them the early-modern confessor as well as the present reader today can find clues to malpractice, ethical fallibilities and deontological failures at that time.

Discussioni

This article reviews the recently published critical edition of the autobiography of the German historian Robert Davidsohn (1853-1937), the author of a monumental and until now unsurpassed history of medieval Florence. It was written between 1932 and 1933, with subsequent additions until a few months before his death. These memoirs show the thick network of contacts, which the liberal minded, German patriot and cosmopolitan Davidsohn kept within the political, aristocratic, artistic and intellectual milieux wherever he lived, whether it was in Florence, or Berlin, Munich or in Switzerland. Moreover, the reader will find interesting remarks about Hebraism and anti-Semitism.

Francesco Poggi, Tra contado, consiglio e piazza: conflitto e spazio politico a Orvieto all’inizio del Trecento.

The subject of this article are the interactions between political forces in Orvieto and in Bagnoregio, a small town under the authority of government of Orvieto, in 1303 and 1304. In these two years, the faction in Bagnoregio that attacked the podestà from Orvieto cooperates with the political opposition in Orvieto. These two political forces need to coordinate their efforts in different places and in different institutions to collaborate and fight against the ruling coalition of Orvieto. The paper analyzes how this forces try to integrate their actions that took place in several arenas.

Etienne Hubert, L’accertamento dell’età personale nell’Italia comunale

The paper tries to analyze methods for individual age certification in 13th-14th Italian city-states, where civil life depended on thresholds of age, which the principal one was of course the age of majority, such as everywhere at anytime. Legal sources as Artes notariae and jurists as Bartolo and Baldo confronted with judiciary documents and normative sources put evidence on two ways of certification, the aspectus corporis performed by the judge and the denumeratio annorum proved by oath and witnesses, which allowed the judge to pronounce its sentence, the instrumentum annorum.

Accompanied by the secretary Jean-François Morellet (younger brother of the most famous André Morellet), by the scientist Nicolas Desmarest and the draftsman Jean-Jacques de Boissieu, between September 1765 and May 1766 Duke Louis-Alexandre de La Rochefoucauld accomplishes his unique journey to Italy. Although it cannot be assimilated to the classic Grand Tour, it pursues the main purpose of allowing all participants to have new experiences, both human and cultural, and to progress in their respective professional fields.

Lorenzo Ciccarelli, Scenografie pontificie. Il viaggio di Pio IX nelle Legazioni

In 1857 Pope Pius IX organized a long journey to the Legations. Conveyed as a pilgrimage to the Basilica della Santa Casa in Loreto, the journey was a broader and strategic operation in order to reinforce the presence of the Pope into the population and defend the Papal State from the Italian unification process. The essay analyses the historical and political background of the journey, deepening the artistic, architectonic and urban interventions displayed in some of the cities, as Senigallia and Orvieto, that the Pope visited.

Documenti

Sergio Tognetti – Veronica Vestri, Nuovi documenti su Dino Compagni

The essay focuses on the publication and historical contextualization of 35 notarial deeds drawn up for Dino Compagni, his family and his business company between October 1300 and September 1301. These documents produced by notary Jacopo di Guido di Dato da Campi allow us to better understand the economic and social profile of the famous Florentine chronicler, just in the twelve months preceding the violent seizure of power by the Black Guelphs with the consequent political ruin of Dante Alighieri and Dino Compagni himself.

Memorie

The articles aims at reconsidering the emergence of the first statutory legal systems of Rome during the 12th century. The understanding of such phenomenon has been so far hindered by the total lack of ‘internal’ evidence such legal manuscripts, registers, and received letters. A new methodological approach has been used: the analysis of defensio formulas in private documents issued by Roman churches, where the first Roman statutory systems (bonus usus, consuetudines) are mentioned e contrario. The process is here reconstructed considering the history of Roman iudices, the so-called «legal Renaissance», and the formation of municipal Roman courts – the Senate –, as well as through a comparison with the more complete case of Pisa.

The essay represents the fourth stage of a study dedicated to literary texts and the relationship with the chamber of acts of the municipality of Bologna in the last quarter of the 14th century. The article reconstructs the tradition of the superfund of the deliberations of the city’s municipal councils and at the same time investigates the articulation of the political discourse of the government of the people. At the heart of the contribution are the articulating of political language and the invention of the tradition of remembrance in relation to archival papers, the municipal documentary system.

Richard A. Goldthwaite, Performance of the Florentine economy, 1494-1512: the silk and wool industries

This article reports the results of a study of the surviving accounts of lanaiuoli and setaiuoli firms dating to these years. It reveals, first, that the emergence of new markets abroad assured an extraordinarily high level of performance for both industries, and, second, that the overlapping function of these markets with respect to the supply of raw materials and sales of finished products generated an intricate web of mutually dependent inter-industry relations among firms of a kind that had never existed earlier. Both conclusions raise some question about a historiography that emphasizes the intense political and social tensions during these years without even a glance at the economic interests shared by the men involved.

Documenti

In Spring 1940, the great medieval historian Gino Luzzatto stumbled across a treasure trove of documents held in the synagogue of Livorno. Banned from his university post and from accessing all Italian state archives and libraries by the Fascist racial laws, he asked his anti-Fascist and Jewish friends who had emigrated to the United States to help him secure the financial support he needed to work in Tuscany. They failed. And by 1944, Allied bombs had all but destroyed Livorno, including its synagogue. This article reconstructs Luzzatto’s aborted plan for writing a history of early modern Mediterranean commerce on the basis of records that are now mostly lost.

Memorie

Silvia Diacciati, L’immagine di Dante nel Palazzo del Bargello

In 1840 a portrait of Dante Alighieri was found in the Bargello Palace. The poet’s presence among the Elect in Heaven, painted on the altar wall of the Magdalen Chapel, has generally been accepted by Dante scholarship until the Seventies of the last century. Since then, however, this has been far from a straightforward issue, and thus deserves reconsideration. This article examines the extent to which the claim of that presence may find confirmation through a purely historical analysis of the Florentine context.

The present paper conducts a study on a notarial protocol conserved in the Florence State Archive which contains about five hundred acts drawn up by the Florentine notary ser Bonaccorso di Gerino del Cacciato for the Florence cathedral chapter between 1340 and 1346. The objective is the reconstruction of the aforesaid notary professional profile and the description of the institutional structure, the administrative activities and the complex of the land and estate properties of the Florentine cathedral chapter in the years preceding the Black Death.

This work analyses the political communication campaign that developed following the Sienese conspiracy of 1456. The aim is to show how the political factions in power in Siena during the Renaissance continued to use the political culture of the Buon Governo [Good Governance] to legitimise their authority and gain broad popular consensus. In this case, the new government even succeeded in legitimising the closure of the political situation and establishing a temporary oligarchic season with the use of political communication based entirely on the civic symbols and languages of the bonum commune [common good].

The issue of the nation and the national State runs through all the historiographical activity of Romeo, from its beginning and, in particular, in the years between 1976 and 1979. In that period, with a rather homogeneous series of interventions, Romeo tries to carry out a historiographical revision and a conceptual clarification, placing himself immediately in a critical attitude towards the prevailing orientations in Italian historiography on these issues. At the same time, Romeo reflects upon the history of the post-war Western Europe, in which the crisis of the sense of national belonging has caused important changes both in public ethics and collective behavior.

Documenti

Matteo Al Kalak, Generazioni riformatrici. Muratori

The article focuses on the correspondence between Lodovico Antonio Muratori (1672-1750) and the chancellor Beltrame Cristiani (1702-1758). Through their correspondence, it shows how a generation of politicians and intellectuals, engaged in political reform, took Muratori as a point of reference, recalling in particular his jurisdictional battles against the undue claims of the Roman Curia and his proposals for religious reform.

Discussioni

Remo L. Guidi, Gomes Eanes ovvero un fiorentino del Portogallo

This book is a collection of letters addressed to Gomes Eanes, the abbot of the Badia Fiorentina between 1419 and 1439, but curiously what is absent in it is precisely the protagonist himself. However, we come to know a world filled with Portuguese clients who resort to him for a wide variety of motives. Also present are monks with their own stories of financial debts, their need to assist old and sick relatives, problems of the most serious sort touching on the reform of the order, the perils they have undergone in their travels, their concerns about going on trips on horseback, and other such problems that one would have trouble finding in official documents.
