Memorie

XII-XIV)

In the Middle Ages arbitration is the main dispute resolution tool between institutions, be they ecclesiastical bodies, political parties or municipal cities. The article focuses on a series of juridical features of this institute that have mostly influenced the sources we use to study this topic, their terminology and also their silences. The main question is the extent of freedom available to arbiters, and its link with another freedom typical of arbitration: that of dispensing, to some extent, with written procedure.

This article presents the phenomenon of rationalisation of urban space on the example of late medieval Milan. Its main goal is to discuss and compare the use of mathematical tools and measurements in literary descriptions of urban form created in De magnalibus Mediolani of Bonvesin de la Riva (1288) and Cronica Extravagans of Galvano Fiamma (late 1330’s).

This article focuses on the short rule of Sigismund of Luxembourg, king of the Romans and of Hungary, in the eastern Veneto (esp. in Belluno, Feltre and Serravalle) between 1411 and 1420. Based mostly on inedited sources from the Belluno archive, it attempts to reconstruct the historical developments of this area with a special emphasis being put on the ‘political personnel’ of King Sigismund (vicars and captains). The author shows that most of these officials as well as their garrisons came from the Czech lands. Finally, the structures of Sigismund’s administration and the often difficult coexistence with the local town communities are analysed.

This article sheds light on the role played by Francesco Guicciardini in the last six months of his tenure as Luogotenente generale, on behalf of Pope Clement VII. Focusing on the dramatic period from January to June 1527, this essay unveils a series of letters sent by Guicciardini to the Otto di Pratica, the executive magistrate of the Florentine Republic at this time. These letters were hitherto known only through the drafts kept in the Archivio Guicciardini, but not through the originals sent and received. The overall perspective shifts and reshapes the portrait of the Luogotenente as a man of action who makes bold decisions in order to protect his homeland, Florence, while unwittingly condemning Rome to the Sack.

Memorie

Michael E. Bratchel, Syndication and the Office of the Sindaco Maggiore in Fifteenth-century Lucca

The present article explores the office of the Maggior Sindaco and the practice of the Sindacato in Lucca during the decades after the restoration of republican liberty in 1430. In this, as in other respects, fifteenth-century Lucca was sui generis. But syndication itself, in diverse forms, was common throughout much of Mediterranean Europe. The Lucchese case-study, presented in comparative context, serves to expand our understanding of the range of possibilities inherent in the institution and its processes.

This essay is about Giovanni Andreozzi, a merchant of Lucca who lived between Lyon and Paris and was a close friend of a famous man of letters, Blaise de Vigenère. Andreozzi, to whom Vigenère dedicated the Trois Dialogues de l’Amitié (1579), acted as a ‘cultural intermediary’ and favored the spread of Italian literary works in France. He translated from French into Italian a work of Vigenère’s, Images ou Tableaux de platte-peinture (1578). Back in Lucca, his intention was to print this work, but he was unable to do so.

Alessandro Volpi, Ribelli senza politica.

The text examines the different definitions of the term rebellion contained in the Dictionaries of the first part of the nineteenth century, from which emerges a relevant distance from the political meaning assigned to the term itself; the elaboration of a common language of Italians tended to resort, in the case of rebellion, to examples and expressions taken from remote history and religious repertoires, excluding any revolutionary contamination. In this sense, the distance between the Dictionaries and the regulatory codifications established in those years was also evident.

Discussioni

This paper discusses the Passio Miniatis, both BHL 5965 (8th/9th c.) and BHL 5967 (11th c.), recently edited by Silvia Nocentini (2018). In the first part the paper deals with the main features of the new edition; in the second part it raises some historical questions on these texts. In particular, the paper proposes to analyse the Passio in the context of Italic political networks, both in the Carolingian age and in the years of the Emperor Henry II.

Memorie

Giuliano Pinto, Beneficium civitatis.

This essay focuses on the different functions of the wool industry in the cities of late medieval Italy. At that time the production of woolen fabrics was by far the most important manufacture. It produced wealth and fame; it employed a large part of the people, artisans and wage earners, especially the subordinate workers. For the ruling class, the increase in the wool industry meant to reduce social tensions and prevent riots: it was truly a beneficium civitatis.

Emanuela Ferretti, Fra Leonardo, Machiavelli e Soderini.

This essay examines a famous episode of Florentine history: the attempt to deviate the Arno upstream of Pisa in order to deprive the rebel city of the river’s waters (1503–1504). The enterprise, well documented in the accumulated studies on Leonardo da Vinci and Niccolò Machiavelli, is analyzed along two avenues: for the first, the copious published documents are reread and contextualized, seeking to separate the certain elements from the numerous hypotheses that have filtered down in the literature and that too often have become real historiographic myths; for the second, new sources are presented that clarify the final phases of the project while also shedding light on the entire affair and the role played by each character: not just Leonardo (whose presence was limited to one initial phase, separate from the building site), Pier Soderini, and Niccolò Machiavelli, but in particular, the Duke Ercole I d’Este and his trusted architect Biagio Rossetti.

The paper focuses on the reconstruction of theoretical and practical teaching for surgeons as well as practical training for physicians in the Florentine Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova. Heterogeneous and unpublished sources are discussed that confirm the hypothesis of an educational function already present at the end of the sixteenth century under the Grand Duke Francesco I (the oldest document has hitherto been from 1630). These documents integrate the names of the first doctors with explicit teaching assignments and suggest that ‘medici astanti’ could be assigned didactic tasks as early as the seventeenth century.

Christian Satto, Una memoria pubblica difficile: il caso del monumento fiorentino a Bettino Ricasoli

The present essay aims to analyze the reasons behind the eighteen years (1880-1898) that Florence employed to inaugurate the statue of Bettino Ricasoli in Piazza dell’Indipendenza. The monumental consecration of Ricasoli, which at least apparently should not have provoked neither lengthy nor controversy for the undisputable patriotic merits of the baron, was an interesting example of the contradictions, divisions and perplexities that the definition of a public memory, in his relationships with contemporaneity, brought out. In this framework emerged a private place of memory, prepared by Ricasoli himself during his lifetime: the Castle of Brolio in Chianti.

The essay analyzes the theft of a relic happened in 1277: in the city of Saint John of Acre, Arnaldo from Volterra stole a strip of the garment that was said to belong to the Virgin, and subsequently brought it to the bishop of the Tuscan city. Studying the production, the tradition and the fruition of the text which tells the story allows to shed light on the political context of Volterra between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries

Discussioni

The present work examines the proceedings of the conference held in Ascoli Piceno in 2014 and published in 2017 by Isa Lori Sanfilippo and Roberto Lambertini under the title Francescani e politica nelle autonomie cittadine dell’Italia basso-medievale. The work aims to highlight the fundamental and indissoluble link – translated in various manners and degrees – between Franciscans and various cities. In the political sphere, this dialectic finds one of the most significant fields in which to exert influence and provoke consequences.

Memorie

Maya Maskarinec, Why Remember Ratchis? Medieval Monastic Memory and the Lombard Past.

This article examines the events surrounding the abdication of the mid-8th-century Lombard king Ratchis and the accession of his successor, king Aistulf, as presented in contemporary sources, and as remembered in later historiographical and documentary sources from the monasteries of Montecassino, Volturno, Farfa, Monte Soratte, Monte Amiata and Nonantola. A close reading complicates the accepted narrative (Ratchis abdicated, Aistulf took power) that quickly took hold, and demonstrates how, because monasteries were actively involved in the power-politics of Ratchis’ and Aistulf’s reigns, and because property claims (and property documents) and the Lombard past continued to matter in later centuries, 10th- to 12th-century monks continued to remember and rework their materials related to this past.

The article deals with the question of the social condition of women in 14th century Gubbio. In the footsteps of recent historiography, the main goal of this paper is to spot similarities and differences between the legal status of women according to the local Statuto and the practical behaviours reconstructed through the analysis of notarial records. The result is a complex framework in which the law was not always able to restrain the agency of women: married or widowed, noble or popolari, the women of Gubbio managed to retain a significant level of freedom by owning and conducting real properties, making wills, and working, especially in textile manufacture, farming and hospitality.

Ernesto Lettieri, Profezia, politica, religione e censura nelle pseudo-lettere di san Francesco di Paola su Savonarola (prima metà XVI – prima metà XVII secolo): prime ipotesi interpretative.

This essay concerns the issue of the epistolary relationship documented by three pseudo-letters, traditionally ascribed to Saint Francis of Paola and sent to Savonarola. After having described the Florentine documentary context and having identified the main medium of transmission of the tradition in the Vita of Pseudo-Burlamacchi (first half of the XVIth century), it analyzes the content features, with special reference to two binomials: the Savonarolan Movement-the Medicean achievement and the acknowledgment-disavowal of Savonarola. At the end, the essay deals with the tradition of the letters from the beginning of the XVIIth century to the censorial interference by the Index Congregation (1659), noticing the insert of components from the Order of Minims on the until then prevalent Savonarolan feature, during the transition from manuscript to printed circulation.

Discussioni

This essay investigates the relations between the production of norms and the political evolution of the towns of the Kingdom of Naples in the 13th-15th centuries. Starting from the features of statutes and customary law codices – poor organization of contents, ‘private’ nature of the norms and lack of rules on institutional structures – the essay examines the reasons and logic behind the realization of law collections, as well as the role played by the monarchy in urban production of norms (especially on institutions), through an in-depth analysis of some case-studies from the northern regions of the Kingdom.
