Samuele Fabbri, Non perfidior Catilinae coniuratio. La strategia comunicativa di Benedetto XI al tempo della legazione fiorentina di Niccolò da Prato (1304)

The peacemaking mission of the Dominican cardinal Niccolò da Prato, held in 1304, represented one of the key moments in Florentine political history between the 13th and 14th centuries. This article investigates the communication strategy of Pope Benedict XI (former Master of the Order of Preachers) after the failure of Niccolò’s legation. In particular, through the analysis of the Rex pacificus bull, it is shown how the pope attempted to create a negative public image of the black Florentine Guelphs opposed to the cardinal, drawing on themes and figures from the political imagination of Florentine citizens.

Aldo Giuseppe di Bari, Dal Mar Nero a Bologna: un primo sguardo sulla presenza di schiave e schiavi nella documentazione dei secoli XIV-XV

The slave trade in the Late Middle Ages has received consistent historiographical attention and the theme has been the subject of a rich and established scholarship. These works, however, did not take Bologna – a city both far from the sea and distant to the Genoese/Venetian circuits – into consideration in their analysis. By studying a vast range of archival documents, such as sale deeds, emancipation acts and trial records, the present paper explores the connections between the city and the Mediterranean slave routes in order to try establishing the traits and the size of the enslaved population in the area.

Michele Donno, I governi Moro e la crisi economica degli anni Sessanta. La politica finanziaria di Roberto Tremelloni (1964-1965)

Tremelloni was a ‘frontier’ man, because he knew how to reconcile, in his government action, the defense of the market economy and private initiative with reformist policies, open to economic planning. Faithful to Einaudi’s teachings, he joined the social democratic split of Palazzo Barberini and was a protagonist of the De Gasperi governments, but also an active supporter of the ‘organic center-left’. Some measures he promoted during the first two Moro governments, which operated in an unfavorable international economic situation, helped to define the tax system of republican Italy. An economic policy in line with that of other countries belonging to the European Community and which received open US approval.

François Bougard, L’empereur Lothaire rappelle à l’ordre les notaires toscans: Liber Papiensis Loth. 82

A short text attributed to Lothar I by the Liber Papiensis recalls that the dating of charters must include not only the month but also the day of the month: it is aimed at the Tuscan scribes, who it must be understood had deviated from this rule. The analysis of the Lucchese documents shows in fact that the habit of indicating only the month became the majority for about 25 years, until the mid-810s. The last occurrence is in 824, after which the discipline was strictly applied. The capitulum could be assigned to Lothar’s first stay in Italy, in 822-823.

Giancarlo Vallone, Verso una storia costituzionale del Mezzogiorno

The two recent volumes (2018) by Francesco Senatore about Capua in the 15th century, deal in depth, on the basis of a very rich documentation, the institutions of the city, the methods of construction and management of the large district, the tax system, without at all excluding from the evaluation the frequent and repeated quarrels which are wisely considered structural to this type of overlap of territorial powers. Derives from it the possibility of a new story of southern Kingdom of Italy, in terms of constitutional history.

Anna Maria Voci, Ebreo e tedesco. Un nuovo libro sul giovane Richard Krautheimer negli anni di Weimar

This essay reviews a newly published book of the German art historian Ingo Herklotz on the beginning of the academic career of Richard Krautheimer (1897-1994). Its focus is on the German years of this outstanding German-Jewish art historian (1923-1933), who had to leave Germany in 1933 and lived afterwards in Italy and in the USA. Herklotz shows how Krautheimer’s German years were crucial for his intellectual development and his later achievements, the most important of which was the monumental Corpus Basilicarum Christianarum Romae.

Matteo Taddei, La nozione della Renovatio Imperii Romanorum nel Chronicon di Titmaro di Merseburgo

This article examines the consequences of Otto III’s renewed policies based on the narrative performed by Thietmar bishop of Merseburg in his Chronicon and other contemporary sources. The concept of Renovatio imperii Romanorum is not taken for granted, so an analysis of the sources that insist on that notion is proposed, focusing on the way in which Ottonian policies have been received and spread in that precise historical context.

The article analyzes the political situation of the provinces of Abruzzo in the decade following the 1647-48 revolt in relation to the phenomenon of banditry, focusing on the Spanish Monarchy’s ability to maintain public order on the border of the Kingdom of Naples. The support offered by the French Embassy at the Holy See to the initiatives of the bandit ‘Martello’ was part of a plan aimed at reducing the Habsburg influence in the Italian peninsula.

Cosimo III de’ Medici promulgated the neutrality of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany to protect its economic interests from late 17th-century European conflicts. However, Medicean policy went into crisis when, in 1696, an English merchant based in Livorno plundered some French vessels in the Levant. This article aims to investigate the long-lasting diplomatic strategies carried out by the Tuscan government during the international crisis generated by the case.

Dino Mengozzi, Vite semplici. Vite da eroi. Necronominalismo e democratizzazione dei nomi dei caduti della Grande guerra

Between 1914-1938, the enormous task of documenting the names of the dead soldiers, which was instrumental in permitting mass mourning processions, was led by nations. This essay analyses the construction of ‘necronominalism’ beginning in mid-nineteenth century, specifically at the time of Garibaldi. The new way of combat during WWI was no longer man against man but moreover machine against machine so that no one was a celebrated hero. It is for this reason that the list of dead inscribed on the monuments is in alphabetical order. It shows that a common soldier could have a higher rank than his officer. This also diminished any preceding hierarchy and eliminated any idea of sacredness in the ‘red leftist’ funeral ceremonies. Fascism transformed this ‘democracy of death’ en masse without reference to the individual

The essay deals with the discussion of Tamar Herzig’s new book, A Convert’s tale. She wrote the story of a Jewish goldsmith, Salomone da Sessa, who worked for Duke Ercole d’Este and his wife, Eleonora d’Aragona in the Italian peninsula at the end of the XVth century. In 1491 Salomone converted to Christianism as Ercole de’Fedeli. Through this case, Herzig highlights several important features such as the social and religious relationships between Jews and Christians.

Lidia L. Zanetti Domingues, Rituali di liberazione dei prigionieri nell’Italia del Duecento: il caso toscano tra diritto e religione

Rituals of liberation of poor prisoners condemned for minor crimes on the occasion of Christian feasts have not received specific attention in the historiography of communal Italy. Nevertheless, they can foster our knowledge of the Italian late Middle Ages by shedding light on aspects such as the concept of civic religion and the relationship between criminal justice and spirituality in the communes. This article focuses on the origins of these practices, which seem to occur for the first time in 1270s-1290s Tuscany, but which subsequently became common in other areas of central and northern Italy.

These changes had clear effects on legislation, practices of justice and international relations.

Alessandro de’ Medici’s rule has been considered for centuries as a black tyrannical parenthesis between the republic’s crisis and the real foundation of the principality operated by Cosimo I. This article aims instead to read this period as a crucial phase of the wider process of consolidation of the Medicean State. Particularly, the understudied documentation produced between 1530 and 1537 by the Florentine magistracies in charge of the Dominio enlightens that the Medici government started to reform the territorial administration towards the financial protection of the subject communities, in order to better assure their collaboration to the prince’s projects.

It was written by the Florentine merchant Francesco di Giuliano de’ Medici in 1471-1472 when, aged about twenty, he travelled in Turkey for the commerce of wool fabrics produced by the firm of his father. The paper analyzes the contents of the register and compares them with those of other Florentine account books written in Turkey for the same purpose, in order to clarify the development of the Florentine commerce with the Ottoman Empire.

Maria Elena Cortese, Le frange inferiori della cavalleria nelle campagne toscane: scutiferi e masnaderii tra inquadramento signorile e mobilità sociale (secc. XII-XIII)

The focus of this essay is a category which included armed men on horseback of humble origins but clearly separated from the simple rustici through military practice, closeness to the local lord as well as through their lifestyle. Carrying out armed activities, whether or not within a feudal tie, was the primary and the busiest way for upward social mobility within the rural lordships. The economic growth in the 12th century Tuscany also began to offer new possibilities for economic accumulation and investment and ever faster social mobility in the countryside. From the 13th century onwards the consolidation of the communal power over wider areas of the ‘contado’ opened up to the members of the rural elites a further and more direct channel to access military status.

The essay provides an assessment of the perceptions of the Ottoman Near East in Tuscany and Italy in the late eighteenth century and discusses their diffusion in Europe on the verge of the French Revolution. The text centers on the travel experiences of Giovanni Mariti and his cousin Domenico Sestini in the Levant, Cyprus and Mesopotamia tapping on a rich body of printed and unpublished evidence. By analyzing an extended network of correspondents the essay tries to evaluate the interplay of mobility and information during the late Enlightenement.

The expression ‘Italian dualism’ is responsible for having contributed to building the prejudice of a South characterized only by economic immobility and cultural backwardness. The need to search for the origins of the political use of this prejudice stems from this proven communication strategy. This contribution, in fact, focuses its focus on the chronological segment that ends with the fall of the ‘Destra storica’ from the Unit, because this political phase is identified as a promoter of the stereotypes conventionally attributed to the South. The old ruling class sets up its own electoral campaign (1874-1876) by focusing its political discourse on the superiority of the northern regions, while the ‘Sinistra storica’ responds with an argumentative strategy that overturns prejudice.

These pages are dedicated to the memory of the scientific figure of Carlo Poni, in particular by examining his essays related to the world of silk and collected in the volume La seta in Italia. The unifying element of these contributions and their connection with the other main fields of his commitment (research on agricultural issues and dissemination activities with the foundation of the Museo della civiltà contadina and the Museo del Patrimonio industriale di Bologna) was his constant methodological tension. Poni was a well-rounded historian, curious and critical scholar of what he defined as the Scienza del vissuto, which he practiced with extraordinary empathy; his lesson still has much to teach us.
