Paolo Tomei, Spazi politici e strutture parentali nella galassia carolingia. Gli Adalberti fra Baviera, Toscana e Provenza

The aim of the article is to contribute to the reflection on aristocratic kinship structures and political spaces of action in the Carolingian world. At the centre of the investigation lies a well-known object of research, but observed from a new interpretative perspective: the kinship group of the so-called Adalberti, marquises in Tuscany from the middle of the 9th century.

Stefano Malfatti, Fra Verona e Trento.

The essay aims at investigating the activities, the movements and the integration processes of a number of merchant-bankers who were active – between the end of the fourteenth century and the mid-fifteenth century – in some cities of Northern Italy, including Verona and Trento, but with interests and business networks in other places as well. After an analysis of the political and economic context of the cities of departure (including Siena) and of arrival, the economic activities exercised by those merchant-bankers and the networks of their relationships, also with the local ruling class, are described in detail. Finally, we will examine some parameters that allow to measure their rooting in the various cities where they obtained the citizenship.

Gaia Bruno – Giacomo Bonan, «Contro l’azione struggitrice del tempo». Progetti di ripristino dell’acquedotto Claudio

The article analyses the history of a project – the exploitation of the Serino water springs in the mountains near the city of Naples – with its alternative fortunes, from its first hypothesis during the XVI century to the actual construction of the infrastructure in the XIX century. By contextualizing the different proposals, the article aims to highlight how much political factors count for the construction of water infrastructures in comparison with the more studied economic or demographic aspects.

As most of the more recent historiography demonstrates (Burgwyn, Mallett 2003, Strang 2003, De Grand 2004, etc.), the Italian aggression on Ethiopia was an open challenge to the great Western powers and to the post-war international order established in Paris in 1919. The research aims to address the topic through the recent availability of the documents of the League of Nations. This by enhancing the new archival documentation and analyzing the position of the Italian government.

Discussioni

Sergio Tognetti, Schumpeter incatenato.

The essay discusses Chris Wickham’s recent monograph devoted to the origins of the commercial revolution of the Middle Ages. In addition to summarizing the salient arguments of the volume, this contribution would like to highlight the methodological, historiographical and cultural implications that lead the British scholar to almost completely overturn the traditional view of the Mediterranean economy in the 11th and 12th centuries.

Reviewing a German book by Hedwig Richter on reforms and mass-politicisation in Germany during the Second Reich, which stresses the degree of modernity reached by Germany during that period, the Author of this essay warns to use some caution, as the elements of the so-called modernity cannot be considered as a predominant character of that period of German history. Modernity in Germany during the Second Reich concerned economy, science, technology, not the State and its institutions, nor politics. Moreover, those elements of modernity did not succeed in spreading in the majority of Germans a really liberal and democratic culture, which is one of the main features of modernity.

Located in the heart of the Western Mediterranean and ten kilometres far from Sardinia, Corsica was one of the major issues of the war between Genoa and the Crown of Aragon, in the 14th and 15th centuries. Within the current replacements of the study of diplomacy based on the notion of ‘actors’, this article, should aim to decode the ambitions, means and limits of the diplomatic actions of the Corsican people, in Barcelona and Genoa.

This paper studies the structures of clothing consumption at the end of the Middle Ages. First, it concentrates on the actors of the clothing consumption market, highlighting the existence of two main groups of trade, one focused on the sale of fabrics and the other on the manufacture of clothing. It then traces the customer journey, i.e. the practice of consumers purchasing fabric to turn into clothing, and sales, specifically, the elements contributing to the formation of consumer prices. Finally, it focuses on the influence of dyeing colors on consumer prices, a theme which explores the question of preference in clothing colors in the late Middle Ages.

This article examines the academy degli Arcadi, founded in Rome in October 1690, through its institutional, epistolary, and relational networks. The originality of this academy is to be composed of 103 local settlements, in addition to the Roman site, called colonies, distributed almost entirely in the cities of the Italian peninsula. This paper studies the constitution of the institutional network between 1690 and 1800, then analyzes the epistolary network and the peninsular coordination organized from Rome. It will also question the circulations and the mobilities of the members of Arcadia. This study is based on the epistolary archives of the academy degli Arcadi.

Giacomo Carmagnini, Tra politica e metafisica. Gli idéologues e la repubblica ideale

The essay aims to examine the historical-political path of the group of philosophers and intellectuals known as idéologues, from its origins to the end of the French revolutionary decade. Historiography has rediscovered these descendants of philosophes only in relatively recent times, but it has not yet comprehensively examined their political action within the revolutionary context. The study will demonstrate that, thanks to a precise epistemological theory, the group of idéologues was able to give a precise direction to the policy not only French, but also European.

Results, open issues and new perspectives of a book that deals with the theme of public goods and their economic and environmental impact between the 9th and 11th centuries are discussed, in the light of the growing wealth and abundance of material evidence now available and in the hypothesis of a their role as engines of growth in the early stages of European economic expansion.

Le origini del fascismo. Rileggendo Roberto Vivarelli

Memorie

A former history editor at Il Mulino Publishing House, the author reconstructs the long lasting relationship that tied Vivarelli to his publisher, from 1981 to the very last days of Vivarelli’s life in 2014. Drawing on correspondence and personal recollections, the author traces down the history of publication of half a dozen books (that is, almost all of his works), including the controversial memoir La fine di una stagione and the classic three volumes Storia delle origini del fascismo.

Paolo Pombeni, Il sistema politico italiano dall’Unità al 1922

This essay tries to present an overview on the political and constitutional framework of the interaction among various players. Designed on the model of French and partially British constitutionalism, the Italian system was linked to the considerable development of the public spirit and the progressive enlargement promoted by the new electoral laws. This ended in an increasing change of the classical mind linked to the British model for a new more German like model based on the pre-eminence of the executive power with all its connections with the Crown. The emergence of some form of mass party politics put the liberal tradition in crisis, what lead to the turmoil of post war period which under the shock of a P.R. electoral law made it difficult to be managed by the old notables.

Andrea Baravelli, Le campagne

The attention shown by Roberto Vivarelli to the rural dimension of the crisis of the liberal system has in fact revolutionised studies on the rise of fascism. In addition to analysing its role with respect to the overall articulation of the Storia delle origini del fascismo, the article aims to compare with the most recent historiography the specific thesis of the inseparability of the link between the radicalisation of the peasant classes, the affirmation of socialist maximalism and the consequent rise of fascist reaction. If the result resizes the original thesis of the lack of nationalisation of the Italian countryside, it confirms Vivarelli’s original intuition of the absolute centrality of rural phenomena with respect to the evolution of the crisis of the liberal state.

One of Roberto Vivarelli’s strands of inquiry was certainly the careful analysis of the conduct of the ruling class in the face of the problems of the early postwar period and its attitude toward fascism in an attempt to understand the reasons for the collapse of the liberal state. Vivarelli, in fact, was deeply convinced that fascism had been the consequence of the collapse of the liberal state, not its cause. He, moreover, believed that without a careful study of the context, the reasons for fascism’s victory, which constituted the failure of the liberal season, could not be understood.

Simone Neri Serneri, Far tornare i conti.

Active in the second half of the twentieth century and the early 2000s, Roberto Vivarelli devoted most of his studies to the theme of the origins of fascism, from a perspective that united post-war events with the history of united Italy. The essay rereads Vivarelli’s historiographical production considering his original motivations and issues with which his conception of liberalism was confronted as well as the ethical and political bias and assessments Vivarelli matured in the face of the events of his time. The essay highlights the links and mutual conditioning between Vivarelli’s ideal orientations and the evolution of his production, also explaining in this way its strengths, but also its overt aporias, primarily in the interpretation of the origins of fascism.

The letters of Frederick II of Swabia represent a source of great importance for reconstructing the emperor’s ideology and government practice, but their use requires great caution. The paper examines the case of a naval battle fought at the beginning of 1248 on the Po River and won by the emperor’s son, Enzo, proposing the hypothesis that the imperial notaries deliberately modified the chronology of the battle, moving it from the beginning to the end of February, in order to spread the news of a presumed imperial revenge, after the defeat suffered by Fredrick II at Vittoria (Parma) on February 18.

The manuscript Lat. 373 of the Biblioteca Estense in Modena provides an unknown witnessing of Andrea Redusi’s Chronicon tarvisinum (c. 1420-1430). The manuscript transmits the section of the Chronicon running from the time of Emperor Valentinian to 1369, and it is the only surviving part of the copy of the Chronicon Pietro Ercole Gherardi made for Muratori in 1723-1724.

The rise of mercenarism in 14th century Europe is a common topic for medieval studies, but its earlier history is almost unknown. The Commune of Siena provides a good case study for the 13th century due to its administrative and financial archival records that date up to 1226. Many such documents can be used to trace the different steps of the recruitment and the archival material that these transactions produced. Another subtopic of paramount importance is the impact of mercenaries on urban economy and institutions.

Solène Minier, Exclure et protéger. Femmes, familles et droit successoral à Padoue (XIIIe-XVe siècles)

Among the many local legislations that excluded women from inheritance from the 12th century on in the Western Mediterranean, Paduan statutes are surprisingly harsh. In the 14th century, the Scaligeri and Carraresi signori chose to distance themselves from Venetian legislation in order to favour upper-class patrimonial concentration. Female exclusion then became a legal tool to assert social pre-eminence against foreign investments in the entroterra and political dispossession.

Throughout the 16th century streams of global knowledge arrived in England, drawing on the continental cultural output and owing to the literary endeavours of individuals who were knowledgeable in many languages. This paper examines the first English edition of the Decades de orbe novo (1555), focusing on the processes of text migration and adaptation of Peter Martyr of Anghiera’s text as it passed from one culture to another. The article also shows the complex ways in which the Decades of the newe worlde provided for 16th-century readers a sensitive insight into the mental world and the social constructs of the indigenous peoples.

The great attention paid over the years to the event of the ‘Marcia su Roma’ corresponds to very few detailed studies (at least on a general level) on the return of the ‘black shirts’ to their cities, on the celebrations organized for them, on the continuation of local violence. The paper intends to partially fill this gap by focusing on Tuscany. The intention is to understand what the immediate and material repercussions of the fascist seizure of power were, on a territory that more than any other had contributed to the number of men mobilized to Rome and, through it, how much the relationship ‘weighs’ between marching squads and their own context.
