This essay reconstructs the failed negotiations between Piedmont and France for a marriage between Elisabeth of France and Victor Amadeus, Prince of Piedmont. After the death of Henry IV and the regency of Marie de’ Medici, French foreign policy changed tack and negotiations were opened for a double Franco-Spanish marriage. These ended successfully with a wedding held in Bordeaux in 1615.

Corey Tazzara, The Pilgrim at Home: Pietro della Valle in Rome, 1626-1652

The essay examines the activities of Pietro della Valle (1586-1652) after his return to Rome from his well-known travels in the East. Exploiting a neglected diary that della Valle maintained until his death, this article argues that his scholarly strategies were closely linked to his political projects for promoting Catholic unity in Europe and missionary activities abroad. The article concludes by reassessing how institutions such as the Index, the Holy Office, and especially the Propaganda Fide may have shaped knowledge production in Baroque Rome.

In May 1915, while his country was on the verge of a civil war, the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio gave a series of fiery speeches against Austria-Hungary, hoping Italy would soon join the Entente. This article uses a variety of sources (newspapers, journals, letters, caricatures, etc.) in order to shed light on those speeches, focusing on two issues: on the one hand, their hateful content (notably, the call for physical violence against both the Austrian diplomats and the Italian MPs who opposed the war, depicted as disgusting animals); on the other hand, the different reactions to the poet’s words not only in Italy but also abroad.

Discussioni

Bruno Figliuolo, Sui rapporti tra Gioacchino Volpe e Benedetto Croce. A partire da una recente pubblicazione

The paper examines the relationship between Croce and Volpe, in the light of the recent edition of the correspondence between the two for over twenty-five years. This work analyzes the period of flowering and growth of that cultural relationship, often materialized in open collaboration, and then that of the progressive removal, due to the Volpe’s failure to fully adhere to the canons of the Croce’s historiography. Finally, the relationship culminated in the open rupture when Volpe joined Fascism.

This article investigates the political aspects of Marquis Boniface of Montferrat’s (1150-1207) career in Latin Romania after the Fourth Crusade. The aim is first to reassess Venetians’ influence in the imperial election lost by Boniface. Then, this study focuses on the struggle between Boniface and Baldwin I (Latin Emperor of Constantinople) around Thessalonica. Lastly, it examines the Marquis’ political network where his wife, ex-Empress Margaret-Maria of Hungary, had a key role in order to cleverly conciliate both Latins and Greeks’ interests.

The article analyses a short text taken from the Masālik al-abṣār fī mamālik al-amṣār, written by Šihāb al-Dīn b. Faḍl Allāh al-‘Umarī (1301-1349) for the chancellery of the Mamluk sultans. Al-‘Umarī obtained part of his information from a Genoese he met in prison: in part, the description of the peninsula mirrors his testimony. More than political relations, he seems interested in the leading Italian realities’ institutional structures and military forces. His interest is predominantly diplomatic, although the military concern is not alien to him. The peculiarity of the text, not yet underlined, lies in the mention of the Italian term ‘comune’, transliterated into Arabic («kumūn»), which the author uses to refer to a type of political order other than the monarchy, typical of the cities of central and northern Italy.

Close to the liberal ideas of Gobetti and the Marxist reflection of Mondolfo, Saragat joined, in 1922, the unitary Socialist Party of Matteotti and Turati, making the themes of reformist socialism his own from his youth. During Fascism, he went into exile in Austria in 1926. In 1930 he moved to France, where he was the protagonist of the reunification of the PSI and of the anti-fascist unity of action. Back to Italy in 1943, he participated in institutional and governmental activities, accepting the appointment as ambassador to France in 1945. From Paris, he reported to De Gasperi about the meetings with the Soviet ambassador Bogomolov and the fears of the USSR about the possible birth of a European Social Democratic ‘third bloc’. This led to the conviction that the ancient Communist aversion to social democracies would regain strength after the war. The attempts by the PSI to merge with the PCI were opposed by Saragat, starting from the socialist congress of 1946, followed, a few months later, by the splitting of Palazzo Barberini.

Discussioni

This essay discusses three books recently published in French on Cardinal Mazarin, two of which focus on how his Italian origins might have affected his career in France and the ways in which he choose to govern. The paper investigates the historiographical frameworks within which the trajectory of Mazarin is understood in these new publications and it questions the narratives that cast him as a key figure in the development of absolutism and suggest that he worked tirelessly to enable the personnel reign of Louis XIV.

Anna Maria Voci, Firenze, punto di fuga: finalmente uno studio sui tedeschi-fiorentini nell’Ottocento

The essay reviews a newly published book of a Germanist, Rotraut Fischer, on the community of the so-called Deutsch-Florentiner during the nineteenth century. They were a group of German men and women, writers, artists, publicists, scholars, who lived for a long time in Florence in close contact with the intellectual and political élite of that town. They appreciated not only the history and cultural heritage of Florence, but also its bourgeois and lay traditions, the republican memories, the liberal atmosphere. They embodied a fusion of cosmopolitism and nation and played an important role as mediators between Italian and German culture, as bridge builders between the two countries during that time.

Silvia Diacciati, Nei panni di Dante. Problemi e ipotesi di iconografia dantesca

Much has been written about the portrait of Dante: a face with a grim profile and hooked nose has for centuries been sufficient to officially identify the poet. In addition to features, however, clothing has also played a significant role in the creation of a true iconographic canon: Dante always wears an ample and long robe and a cap, both colored in red. In this short article I will therefore focus on the style of Dante’s clothing, in the belief that this aspect can provide a contribution to the iconographic history of the poet.

The article deals with the choice of the Perugian ambassadors assigned by the city to its diplomatic missions. The aim is to reconstruct the political and social identity of the ambassadors both in relation to the links between the individuals and the powers involved in the missions, and to internal politics, which was marked by conflicts between the Popolo and the nobility. The chronological period chosen (1351-1379) was a moment of particular tension with the Papacy, due firstly to the switch to the side of the Emperor Charles IV, then to an armed rebellion that ended with the Peace of Bologna (1365-1370), up to the context of the War of the Eight Saints (1375-1378).

Robert Black, The Cathedral School of Santa Maria del Fiore (Collegio Eugeniano) in Florence during the Fifteenth Century

The rise of secular school education in Tuscany during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries led to the closure of Florence’s cathedral school. Pope Eugenius IV sought to remedy the shortage of boy choristers by refounding a non-resident school there to teach Latin and singing in 1436. Latin instruction was the first priority, although boys were introduced to avant-garde polyphony especially later in the fifteenth century. Paedophilia on the part of teachers could be a problem. As in secular grammar schools, classical Latin texts represented the culmination of the syllabus, although one teacher tried to introduce a series of Christian dramas that he himself composed, but the experiment was unsuccessful.

How can it be that the facade of a Christian church could host the star of David, today recognized as the symbol of Judaism all over the world? Investigating the shift over the perception of this symbol over time, the article aims at clarifying the alleged Jewishness of Niccolò Matas, the anconetano architect who projected the facade of the basilica of Santa Croce in Florence and received the honor to be buried just in front of it. Based on archival sources and publications of the time, this research would also like to underline the importance of the historical method, as a way to provide reliable and verified information, in a world overwhelmed by false and fake news.

Some documents of the sixties of the 15th century, preserved in Public Record Office of Siena, throw light on education and training of Piero Leoni (or Pierleone) of Spoleto and allow to learn that the famous physician was a medical student at Siena University and, as student, a candidate for the office of rector of Studium. After the degree in medicine, he was appointed professor of philosophy in the same University for two years.

The role of the Savoyard State diplomacy between the 16th and 18th centuries has not been studied like that of the most important Italian states. Scholars of diplomacy seem to overlook the Savoy case while foreign historians show greater interest. The author takes stock of this issue by pointing out that we are only recently beginning to consider with due importance the Savoy diplomacy and its role in the european history of the Old regime.

On January 10, 1976 the Municipality of Sesto Fiorentino organized a commemoration of Ernesto Ragionieri, who died prematurely at the age of 49 on June 29 of the previous year. On that occasion intervened, among others, Eugenio Garin and Ernesto Sestan. The publication of the speeches was not foreseen, although some time later Garin published his own in the review «Belfagor». Sestan’s speech, present in the homonymous archive kept at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, has remained unpublished until today.

In the period 1100-1140 ca., we observe in Pisa the formation and the consolidation of a new group of judges called «iudices sacri lateranensis palatii».

The essay analyzes the financial history of one of the most important orphanages of Renaissance Italy: the Spedale degli Innocenti in Florence. Thanks to the survival of all the ledgers of the XVth and XVIth centuries, it is possible to reconstruct the costs of assistance to abandoned children. On the other hand, we can outline the forms of financing provided by private individuals, by the state offices and by the Guild of Por Santa Maria. An apparently arid sequence of financial statements, inventories, bank deposits and current accounts reveals an entire universe made up of administrators, treasurers and accountants who gravitated around what we can define as welfare before welfare in a society of the ancien regime. Not to mention the political implications, given the importance that the Spedale degli Innocenti had in late republican and ducal Florence.

Only in January 1973 Italy decided to establish normal diplomatic relations with the GDR. The choice, in the end, was to wait for the definitive normalization of inter-German relations, sanctioned by the Basic Treaty and the full implementation of Brandt’s Ostpolitik, before activating any kind of official contact with the East German authorities. For the socialists, however, the Italian government should have tackled the problem of relations with the GDR in a less schematic way, adopting a pragmatic and gradual approach. The article thus aims to analyze the peculiarities of this political strategy through the PSI official documents.
